New ITEM    From Dave Brennand

Dave has sent us these splendid pictures of some weathering he did for a friend.  The heavy corrosion effect on these 16T Mineral Wagons (Origin unknown) was achieved using fine sandpaper!

Dave Meyricks Steam Day 2011

For those steam buffs amongst you, here are a few pictures of Dave Mericks extensive garden railway.   Taken in July this year (2011).  Previous to this David hadn't been very well but the good news is that he is making a steady recovery, we wish him all the very best and look forward to seeing him soon !!

BBC Dolly

This Bogie Bolster "C" Unfitted was built by Dave Pearcy.  Dave has only been modelling "0" Gauge for approximately 12 months.  The model has been lightly weathered with a real wooden floor, David has sourced this wood planking from the Doll House fraternity.  Apparently used for floor boards.

Editors Note: You are also able to purchase glazing sheets from Dolls House shops.

The Skid Story

Now for something completely different... As stated previously, sometimes my  products are not necessarily used on model railways!  When I supplied a small amount of Delrin Chain and specials sprockets, I had no ideas what would ensue.  The skid story is quite fascinating and a brief description of the story would be: Building a Model Fairground Ride in 1/24 scale.  This article will be regularly updated every time I receive further information. I will now hand you over to Mike Williams and he can explain how this fascination story began.

Having built one's Workshop, we need to fit it out!!

And looking at the pictures below what an admirable job Mike made of it.

Please note: Good fairies KEEP OUT!!!

Delrin Drive

Drawings state, 1/2" pulley on Motor and 1 1/2" Meccano Pulley wheel to Drive shaft. These would be linked with a Meccano rubber drive band. A bit naff really as the band is very thin,so wear and perishability would be a future problem.

Malcolm came to the rescue by supplying near as damn it equal parts in terms of external diameter. The motor sprocket was a 1/8" bore a very tight push fit to the motor drive shaft. The main drive shaft sprocket required a press fit collar to suit the larger bore of 1/4".
The motor has now had loads of hours testing, everything is running as it should.

(Editors Comment...The large Delrin sprocket supplied was non standard, if anyone requires similar items please don't hesitate to contact us)

The roller track ring is now complete with brackets for cars. It has been spray painted and secured to the flange ring and quadrants

Inner platform mounting plates are finished and sprayed. These plates     will be the bases for the inner platform segments made from 16 swg Ally.

The outer track sleepers are all now finished and positioned and as you can see I have now started work on the baseboards for the track.

As you can see the Baseboards have now been laid and levelled. Bottom right hand corner of picture is a laser which I used to pick up the high spots before I started sanding.

This picture shows the steel track for the car's. Plans state mild steel sheet, I chose to use polished stainless
as this will give a great effect from all the LED's when I get to that stage.

Also you will notice a mock up
of the triangle car connectors and one car, these were made to give me an idea of if any of my construction
was out of measurement.

There was a slight error of 1/16th and this has now been sorted.

The steel track has
been the only job that I have had to get done by someone else as my cutter would not handle cutting that
thickness.

Next job will be to make all 8 triangles and cars, a lot of work ahead, but I will send some pics of
their construction plus any mods on the way.

The following show the progress that Mick has made with his skid project.

Car Construction

This picture shows all the component parts for the car triangles. Very time consuming and eight are required. I will post another picture shortly of the assembled triangle with it's final paint job

Car Mounting Triangles

This picture is of two of the car mounting triangles, they are now complete and have the castor fitted.  They have also had a grey primer coat. Only six more to go!!!

Car Bases

In this picture you can see the eight car bases. I needed a break from the triangles so I set about doing the car bases. Plans state to use 4mm plywood to make both pieces and glue together, but as you can see i milled the bases out of one piece of 8mm aluminium, you may not be able to see   but they are not perfect, the faults they do have will be hidden by the car seats anyway.  I am not going to show you a picture  of all the ally that ended up in the bin.

J BUT WE ARE J

Mick has informed us as a deviation from the skid he is now looking into modelling a 1:24th scale Scammell and generator, which he is going to site next to the skid.  He is at present waiting for some line drawings from Gardner Diesels giving the exterior measurements so he can scale down the model.  In typical fashion he has already started the radiator, we look forward to receiving the pictures and wait to be amazed.

J More aluminium Mick ! ! !

As promised Mick has sent  some pictures of the finished radiator and the following script.  When I have done the engine block I will then cut the hoses and the fan cowling to suit. Shame to paint it really, but I will be spraying it and a touch of light weathering too, might leave the brass top as is because if you know how these fairground people like to polish things, well that's my excuse anyway. If you look close enough you can see the 1:24 scale hose clips, amazing what you can do with a bit of scrap off cut from the grill.

As you can see the rocker cover, cylinder bank and engine block are all but finished except for a bit of fine tuning. I t is now starting to take shape and i am looking forward to starting on the detailing.

Mick informs us The Gardner Genny is now finished, really enjoyed myself getting stuck into the detailing. She now sits on an Oak sled. I have left the silencer section of the exhaust pipe as a removable item as if need be when truck mounted it can be converted to Horizontal. have also left plenty of extra pipe to accommodate any shortening if required.

As you all know I have been waiting for the Drawings of the 8 cylinder Gardner with dimensions for conversion to 1:24th scale, well they should be with me shortly I hope as this Engine is the one I want to display along side the Skid. So, to get back some dosh for materials etc, the below 6 cylinder version is going on eBay.
Dimensions.......Ht 71/2" Wth 21/4" Lth 91/2"........Weight 2lb

Editors note:

Mick now informs us that the engine has sold.

In this picture I have finished four of the triangles all in their final paint job, still got four more to go.

 .

WE LOOK FORWARD TO MORE OF MICK'S PICTURES SHOWING HIS PROGRESS WITH THIS INTERESTING PROJECT

Mick will be with us supplying more information on his skid project after hunting season, hold on to your antlers
